Caps and sneakers, the new must-have accessories

Caps and sneakers, the new must-have accessories

Caps and sneakers have always been the staple accessories of any retro fashionista’s wardrobe and this season they are proving to be even bigger!  By bigger we mean brighter, not only will colour appear on the outside, it will also be showcased on the inside of each item.

If you wish to make it as a trendsetter then opt for the brightest gear possible and don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd.  This season’s fashions are bold, brash and in your face and 2011 is all about creating a statement!

Fashions designers will be keeping up appearances with the upbeat tempo and creating a series of show stopping pieces in similar shades.  This is festival fashion gone over board and since we are almost into the season where all the festivals take place, its perfect timing!

A lot of the clothing styles however will stay the same, this season is more about colour and re-introducing colour to already existing outfits and accessories.  For example your standard aviator shades are no longer black, they are floral, stripy, patterned, pink, purple and blue and this goes for everything else!  You’ll need to invest in the shades not only to stay in trend but to also keep the brights at bay!

Look to high street stores for inspiration, they have already stocked up on styles from this season’s catwalks and each is offering a few quirky ensembles for the summer season!

Balancing act

Balancing act

When it comes to hiding flaws and enhancing assets you need to be in the know if you want to create the illusion of a svelte figure.  Layering with a jacket or tee is a great way to flatter a fuller bust, wrap tops are perfect for this…the cinched in waist will create the illusion of a tiny waist and the v-neckline of your shirt will compliment the bust

A skirt is another must-have item in any wardrobe and a-line styles are best suited to those with a fuller shape.  This is mainly because they match your fuller bustline and in turn this will keep you looking proportional.  If you like your skirts to be tucked in and smart, opt or a skirt with a slightly lower waistline, this will create the effect of a longer torso, which will in turn make you look taller and slimmer than you actually are.

Avoiding mini skirts is a must as these may look a little over the top when teamed with an enviable bust region; try instead a smart pencil skirt in order to show off your curves, especially if you have average or larger hips.  This teamed with a smaller waist is the perfect fuller figure and one that will be the envy of all of your friends.

Trousers are another wardrobe essential, whatever your shape.  If you wish for your trousers to hide your hip, opt for a slightly wider style, this will allow the fabric to skim over the hips.

Avoid skinny styles at all costs as such a look will make you appear top heavy, enhancing your bust even more so.

If you have an evening do on the cards you will more than likely want to choose a sexy evening number?  Romantic attire is very much in this season and a piece with both a structured bodice and an a-line skirt will work to enhance and balance your natural shape

Super glam

Nothing quite lifts your mood like accessories and attire that sparkle! There is also no better time of the year than now to invest in such pieces, with an assortment of parties, work do’s and New Year’s Eve on the agenda.

Diamonds are certainly a girl’s best friend; however costume glamour can still make you feel like a star.

In order to create a super glamorous look you will need to take the ‘maximalism’ approach, more is definitely the key here, which is great news for those that can’t decide which accessory to wear. This trend allows you to wear them all at once! So pile on those pearls, add a glitzy belt, work a cute clip into your locks, add a pair of glitzy earrings, a statement neckpiece and of course a towering pair of sparkly skyscraper heels. You will certainly turn a few heads at the Christmas do and this trend is completely in style for the party season.

As well as a glowing dress, accessories such as luxe bracelets, cocktail rings and uber heavy earrings will make even the most low-key outfit shine.

A great piece that is proving popular this season is a cutesy headband; this unexpected accessory is a great way to add a dramatic contrast to an otherwise sexy look.

Combine glitter, metal and super short statement dresses for an ultra glam style. The A-list are certainly embracing this trend, take a few style notes from the likes have Chanel Iman and the actress Kate Hudson. Chanel adopted an uber glitzy look at a recent event and worked a metallic plait headband, a statement chain neckpiece and super dangly earrings. Kate donned a chiffon and metallic floral number for an A-list party; she teamed this piece with Hollywood hair in the shape of super soft and bouncy curls.

Philip Lim’s intermediary thinking bridges the gap between two trends.

Philip Lim’s intermediary thinking bridges the gap between two trends.

Philip Lim

This season has introduced an array of grey flannel, glen plaids and camel hair attire which isn’t the ideal matching to a wardrobe full of edgy studded tops and tees as well as statement rock-style leggings.

Phillip Lim’s intermediary thinking is the answer to all our prayers.  His 1983 inspired leather cut-off jacket is the perfect match to this season’s wide legged trousers and high-waist style garments.  The jacket is created in a sleek leather fabric and offers a cropped silhouette that is perfect for both the garments mentioned as the shortened length won’t hide any of the high-waisted detail.

The New York theme is enthused through Phillip Lim’s entire collection creating an individual minimalist style that is still distinctly feminine.  His line always has a little something extra to offer, either through details such as hand stitching or personal quirky inflections.  All of his clothes have a luxurious feel and have been created in rich yet contemporary fabrics that are perfect for the chic city girl.

His line is renowned for its simplicity and Phillip Lim seems to have the key in designing clothes that have realistic concepts in mind.  Last season showcased an array of garments with the theme strongly showing everything on the outside, this season however, the designer is concentrating on the fundamental nature of his attire and keeping in mind exactly what every girl wants and desires in their wardrobe.  This jacket for instance is just one of those investment buys that will go with outfits already owned as well as the various attire that will be purchased for next season.
