The new range entitled Blouson Noir was in fact a term employed by the Suburban Bordeaux rebels in the sixties who were known for their chic black jackets.

The designer is British born but now works from the Big Apple and began her career twenty years ago purely by chance.  A photographer who admired her quirky style approached her at a party; she was wearing one of her own creations…a man’s dressing gown altered in order to appear as a dress.   She has since worked on a variety of challenging photoshoots, working with the likes of prestigious names including supermodel Kate Moss, designers Helmet Lang, Calvin Klein and Jil sander.  Other names include David Sims and Corinne Day.

Melanie Ward has managed to recreate the grunge look into a trend that resembles a both sophisticated and edgy fashion in the form of distressed tees, worn denim and this season’s must-have statement parka jacket

The key collaborator for the new line is Graham Taylor, a knitwear expert that the designer met whilst conferring with high-fashion house, Chanel.

Her spring/summer collection for 2010 offers an array of quirky pieces including checked shorts, fringed sarong skirts and camisoles, all feature eyelets and lace as well as buckle and zip detailing.  Her creations are both expressive and urban in form and offer a real sense of comparison.

The Alexander Wang way.

The Alexander Wang way.

When we think of sports clothing, images of tracksuits, tees and trainers come to mind, that is unless you are designing for this season’s catwalk shows.

The main highlight of this trend and a must needed investment is the retro shoe boot, gone is the standard trainer only to be replaced by a revamped techno version of the original.  The shoe boot may look a little sporty in the fact it still has laces but it also has a heel.  Good news for those who refuse to wear flats but are still adamant on following the latest trends.

This season’s sports-style throws a little military action in the mix, breaking up the ensemble with a khaki edge.

This laid back and luxury look is set to big this season and all the high street shops will be stocking sport enthused garments.  The key rule in making your outfit stand out from the crowd is to accessorise.  When you opt for designer or highstreet, a bling belt or a statement neck piece can instantly add an edge to an outfit and will also make it individual to the wearer.

Pieces from the Alexander Wang collection appear both everlasting and classic so are therefore a good investment to both this seasons and next season’s wardrobe.  Despite looking effortless, each ensemble still oozed a statement edge.  Grey sports shirts were made fashionable chic with the addition of a laced up corset, ribbed sports socks became flirty by teaming them with wedged loafers or sandals adorned with zippers and the standard sports sac was completely revamped.

Garments were created in an array of fabrics including army, canvas, nylon and leather.  The good thing about this trend is that it not only looks effortlessly chic, it feels it too.

OsmonThe color palette opted for by make-up artists at this seasons shows was predominantly neutral and certainly favored by the designer Marc Jacobs, models sported palettes of taupe, mink, beige and sand tones. These tonal shades featured on the lips, eyes and cheeks.

Other big fashion names including Osman, Pringle, Jaeger and Erdem also opted for the natural look on the eyes, yet added an edge with a slick of gothic-style lipgloss.  This particular look took inspiration from nineties grunge.  This grunge style was especially popular at Antonio Berardi.

Osmon Yousefzada’s 2010 pieces certainly complimented this new beauty trend with classic chic garments.  The catwalk was a wash of rich and voluptuous fabrics complete with subtle silk graphic prints.  These creations were teamed with over-the-top palazzo pants; block colored mohair tunics and floor-length skirts.

Cuts and structures of the garments were kept simple with strong lines, square collars and box pleats.   Despite garments being created in a wash of neutral shades, the pieces still made a powerful yet elegant statement.  Clothing portrayed the illusion of a strong silhouette, perfect for power dressing.

Mascara was kept minimal and hair extremely simple yet still rich in texture, this included combed in partings as seen at both Pringle and Marios Swhwab and locks were simply swept up off the face at Osman.  Both looks appeared simple and almost masculine.

This trend is certainly a fresh change when considering the previous looks of this year, gone are the hot popping colors only to be replaced by the exact opposites.
