The Serpentine Gallery’s annual party.

The Serpentine Gallery’s annual party is one of the must attend events of the summer, where a swarm of Britain’s famous faces put on their best gowns for the prestigious London gathering.

Guests merged under the gallery’s latest creation, which was designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the piece consisted a vivid red assembly complete with ping pong tables. The arrays of guests were then able to experience a performance from the infamous Dizzee Rascal.

When it came to wardrobes choices, there appeared to be two predominant themes on the evening, half of the fashionable crowd opted for a standard summer attire, whilst the other guests went for a classic and sophisticated look in black.

The model and actress Lily Cole wowed the crowds in a bright blue number and opted for an uber on trend maxi-dress, whilst stylist Caroline Sieber went all demure in a nude mini dress created in a romantic chiffon and lace and Donna Air went for the brights in a pretty turquoise number.

Those that rejected the bright colours in favour of classic black included the likes of Julia Restoin Roitfeld, who opted for a floor length black lace gown teamed with black and animal print enthused shoes. Margo Stilley was right on trend for this season and worked both a black and romantic look with an exquisite ruffled creation dress. Charlotte Dellal kept her look subtle in a bandeau maxi-dress and topped it with a shell inspired head piece. Grace Jones made a fashion statement as per usual by teaming a miniscule little black dress with a show-stopping hat.

Artists including David Shrigley, Kiki Smith, Lucas and David Hirst are amongst the few names that will be showcasing their pieces this month in Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery.  The Gallery is set to reveal its first British wallpaper exhibition and will reveal a series of wallpaper designs created by various artists.

Each of the creations differs from normal wallpaper designs in that they tell a story, portray a certain message or offer political views.

Wallpaper in fact says a lot about a home and the person who chose the particular design on display; it is often something that is taken for granted  and this particular exhibition is taking place in order to celebrate this fact and in turn embrace the various styles available.  The exhibition will reveal that wallpaper is in fact a visual tool that brings an environment to life as well as going far beyond just initial decoration purposes.

Kiki Smith’s work resembles a fourteenth century German woodcut style and congers up images of fantasy in the shape of nocturnal creatures and starry skies as well as spiritual imagery.  It portrays a link between both nature and the humans retiring journey through life.

Abigail Lane’s designs on the other hand show a series of repetition in the shape of a deep and baleful message.

Both the pretty hand screened creations from Kiki smith to the dark and sinister designs by Abigail Lane feature in the exhibition aptly titled ‘Walls are Talking: Wallpaper, Art and Culture’.  Each piece allows the audience to enter a world rather than simply peering through a window.
