Americana is one of the key looks to dressing on trend this season.

The Americana look is certainly right on trend for this season; everything from casual yet luxury sports wear to a down-home style has been seen adorning models on catwalks left, right and centre. Think Jessica Simpson in Daisy Duke-esque hot pants; denim is certainly the staple item to hitting this style on the head.

Firstly you should invest in a killer pair of jeans, look to brands such as Hudson, Current/Elliott and Citizens of Humanity. Once you have your perfect pair of jeans, toy with other items such as a denim shirt or a button down denim skirt, Stella McCartney showcased many of these on her recent catwalks.

Teaming denim with denim is still a hot look this year, but if you are a true denim virgin, then go easy at first and introduce just a few items to your wardrobe. A slim build checked shirt is a good start and looks great worn over a chancey bra, team with a little fringe or suede detailing then add kitten heels to finish the look. High top sneakers will add a retro edge to the ensemble and work well with cut off denim shorts.

To steal this style, try to imitate the Ralph Lauren preppy look circa 1992. Add a touch of cowgirl and look to Christopher Kane’s Gingham. The Americana look is a casual, practical and easy to wear style that is perfect for the summer season.

Alexander Wang is certainly one such designer working this year’s New York grunge-glam style, his chain-and-denim grungy creations are set to be a big hit for 2010 and already on many fashionista’s ‘must buy’ lists.

If you can’t quite wait to get your hands on a pair then here are a few simple steps in re-creating your own from an old pair of high-waisted jeans. First of all you will need to invest in a good pair of scissors, a pair of pliers, a needle and thread and a cheese grater, this will aid in adding a little distress to the denim. Accessorise the finished garment with a long chain; this can be picked up from most hardware stores for a couple of pound.

Once you have all your tools you can get started. Simply cut the legs of an old pair of denim jeans using scissors. Take the pliers and cut the chain into different lengths, this will act as a finishing accessory and will dangle off the denim at different angles. To add an authentic fray, use both the cheese grater and scissors to cut both rips and add distress to the denim. The metal chain can then be stitched securely into the rips created; the pliers can then be used to close up the chain links, meaning they won’t become loose.

To add a little glam to this look, layer your newly created grunge denim hot pants over some lace cut-offs. Team with heels or lace up boots for an evening look or keep it simple with a retro tee and old school sneakers for day time attire.

Master the art of the bigger brow and work this season’s trend for fuller brows.

Big brows are certainly proving a hit this season and when done well they will create the appearance of a face that offers a really groomed finish. The first step is to remove all the stray and untidy hairs from both below the arch of the eyebrow and the centre. This can be done using tweezers; you should use precision tweezers with pointed ends along with an eyebrow gel, which will aid in creating a natural shape. The eyebrow gel should be smoothed over the eyebrows in order to get all the hairs facing the same direction, which will in turn help to create the perfect brows.

You should then fill in the brow shape you desire to create using an eyebrow shadow; a shadow a shade darker than your natural eyebrow colour is required. This will add extra definition and create a bolder more dramatic style.

The final touch is to finish off the look with an eyebrow pencil, which can be used to fill and define the eyebrows shape. Filling with an eyebrow pencil will create the illusion of a more compact and fuller brow; you should opt for an eyebrow pencil that has a strong texture and make-up and also one that suits your shade perfectly.

In order to truly finish the look and create eyes that appear both dramatic and definite, add a slick of lash lengthening and volumising mascara to the ensemble.
