Despite the harsh winter weather we already seem to be experiencing this season, the designer Thakoon Panichgul has still decided to create a series of romantic looks in order to transport us away from the cold and wet to a place of warmth and nature instead.

Thakoon is a label that is infamous for their romantic roots and despite last season showcasing a more tougher style, the brand have this season swapped such a look for a series of romantically styled attire for the spring and summer 2011 catwalk shows.

Such looks translate into aptly named Vanilla georgette style trapeze dresses and apricot silk millefeuille slips… even the names of the attire will transport you into a warmer fairytale environment. Other pieces included Pyjama striped silk dresses and Oxford shirts; these were drawn together with hook and eyes and then teamed with loose over organza underwear. All the outfits showcased created an almost dreamlike bedtime feel. Accessories such as silk kaftans were enthused with feather and paisley prints and the trapeze dresses were created with multi-layers of chiffon.

Despite the looks offering an overly romantic and fairytale like appeal, Thakoon still managed to create a perfect contrast between both the modern and ethereal styles; the designer even showcased an assortment of sequin dresses created in a blue python fabric and an array of snake print garments. This seems the style that is set to take over last season’s khaki ensembles and jersey tees.

Schoolgirl Braids make a comeback on the catwalk.

Schoolgirl Braids make a comeback on the catwalk.

Maybe once upon a time braids were a school girl trend, now however this style is taking over the catwalks with models left, right and centre sporting a variety of hair styles. Braids have certainly erupted onto the spring and summer runways, establishing this hair trend as an alternative to the classic ponytail.

Alexander Wang was the first to introduce this style and worked a sporty, seventies version which echoed a certain edge of American cool. Hair stylist, Guido created fat, textured braids and messed them up a little by teasing out strands of hair; these braids were pulled to the side and ran down models’ shoulders. This unkempt style was also seen on the models at Margaret Howell where plaits were stress-free and surf like in style. The look was finished by applying lashings of salt spray to the locks and created the illusion of a day spent on the beach.

Giambattista Valli went for a polished look and kept strands weightless and piled high at the crown of the head, perfect for an evening look. Antonio Marras opted for minute and delicate fishtail plaits which appeared to be weaved loosely in and out of lengthy buoyant hair.

Long length and slender braids were all the rage at both high fashion brands Roberto Cavalli and Miu Miu. Alexander McQueen showcased miniscule and corn-row plaits which were braided extremely taut to the head, this particular look takes inspiration from fossil-inspired sculptures.

This is a perfect no hassle summer style and one which seems set to stay around for a while; it’s certainly a great alternative to wearing the hair down.

How to wear this season’s new florals.

How to wear this season’s new florals.

If you desire to step into summer in style make sure you embrace this season’s florals. Previous seasons have added a biker rock edge to the pretty print but this season goes over the top, teaming not one but several floral embellished pieces together. When working this trend don’t be afraid to clash a mixture of prints.

Try bolder watercolour prints paired with cutesy delicate daisies. Throw in a denim biker jacket or some military khaki to the mix and the ensemble will instantly be taken from girly to tough.

This season isn’t just embracing one print but several, the catwalks were a wash with everything from daisies and buttercups to poppies and extravagant watercolour creations. Models resembled a picture of meadow loveliness. Be sure to look for garden inspired prints that have been worked into flowing fabrics. This is the perfect holiday essential and can work for both day and evening attire, just add heels and accessories. You may be thinking it wise to shy away from accessories with such a clash of prints; bold pieces however work really well in dressing the look up.

Whether you wear this trend just as it is and work the ‘pretty chic’ look for summer or throw in some military style to add a little edge, these are few style staples that should definitely be making their way into our spring and summer wardrobes for 2010. Key pieces include fluttering chiffon shirts, faded or bleached denim and uber summer-style maxi dresses. Finish the look with hobnail boots.
